Bhubaneswar: The change in nomenclature of the Orissa as Odisha or Odissa has left the political leaders a divided lot.
Where some favour the unanimously passed resolution to change the name of the state from Orissa to Odisha, there are few who differ on this.
“There is a lot of scope for discussion as there are different syllables for ‘sa’,” BJD member Pravat Tripathy said.
In Lok Sabha MP Bhatruhari Mahatab’s view, the name should be changed to Odissa in order to refine the syllable.
“I think there is no need for changes as there is very thin line separating the syllables,” BJD member Ananta Das said.
On the contrary, speaker Pradip Amat has said, as the assembly has unanimously adopted a resolution to this effect, there is no need to further change the name of the state.
“The Member of Parliament has his point of view and he can present his view in the parliament. As we have unanimously passed the resolution in the assembly there is no need to change the name,” Speaker Pradeep Amat said.
On December 5 2009, the legislative assembly had unanimously adopted a resolution to change the name of the state from Orissa to Odisha and that of the state language from Oriya to Odia. This was done as per the clauses of the Orissa (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2009 prepared by the Centre for effecting the change in names of the state and its language.
The state legislative assembly on August 28 last year had adopted a resolution seeking the amendment and had forwarded it to the Centre to pass a Bill in the Parliament. President Pratibha Patil had also referred the Orissa (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2009 to the state assembly for its views.
To formalise the changes, the Centre is expected to introduce a bill to amend the Constitution in the monsoon session of Parliament. The new name will be effective once the approved amendment bill is notified.
