Bhubaneswar: Security forces in the Maoist-infested districts have been put on alert as the Maoists observing "martyrs week" to commemorate the 38th death anniversary of Charu Majumdar, the founder of naxal movement, police said here on Wednesday.

An alert was sounded in naxal-hit districts like Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal and Sundargarh district. Vehicular movement was affected as most government and private buses were off the roads, they said.

Shops, business establishments, offices, banks and educational institutions, however, remained open and the overall situation was normal and peaceful, a senior police official said.

"Security has been tightened and combing operation and patrolling intensified," Koraput district Superintendent of Police, Anup Sahu said.

The Maoists put up posters at several places.
